100 YEARS OF ANIMAL NUTRITION RESEARCH IN INDIA
Animal Nutrition Association (ANA) invites you to the Centennial Symposium 2021 with the theme 100 years of Animal Nutrition Research in India being held at Izatnagar during March 11-12, 2021
The need for Animal Nutrition Research to maintain sound health and augmentation of livestock and poultry production in India was recognized during the early years of the 19th century. The formal research on Animal Nutrition in India took shape in 1921 with the establishment of the Laboratory of Physiological Chemists at the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa (Bihar) headed by the eminent scientist. Dr F.J. Warth, DSc, IAS. Subsequently, in 1923, it was moved to Bangalore (now Bengaluru) where it formed one of the two wings of the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. In 1928, the First Royal Commission on Agriculture in India, under the chairmanship of Lord Linlithgow, put particular emphasis on animal nutrition research and recommended the formation of an Animal Nutrition Research Institute in India. Based on the above recommendations, Animal Nutrition Research was made a Section of Imperial Veterinary Research Institute when Sir Frank Ware joined as the institute's Director at Mukteshwar. The Laboratory of Physiological Chemists was made the section of Animal Nutrition Research, and brought from Bangalore to Mukteshwar in the year 1935 and then to the new campus of Imperial Veterinary Research Institute at Izatnagar in the year 1936. Subsequently, the spacious main building of Animal Nutrition Research (which houses the present-day Division of Animal Nutrition) with its majestic look was inaugurated on 11th March 1939 by His Excellency Victor Alexander John Hope II, Marquess of Linlithgow, the then Viceroy and Governor-General of India. It was an exciting moment for the person who as the chairman of the Royal Commission on Agriculture got an opportunity to inaugurate the first building of Animal Nutrition Research established on his recommendations.
Later, four Regional Animal Nutrition Research Laboratories at Anand, Bangalore, Haringhatta and Palampur were established, which were subsequently developed into full-fledged centres.
The Animal Nutrition Division of ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, thus is the oldest seat of systematic research and post-graduate education in animal nutrition in India and played a patriarchal role in spearheading the animal nutrition R&D across India.
On this historical juncture of completion of 100 years since the initiation of Animal Nutrition Research in India in 1921, the Animal Nutrition Association in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) is celebrating the occasion by conducting a Centennial Symposium at ICAR-IVRI Izatnagar Campus on March 11-12, 2021.
I take this opportunity to invite researchers, teachers, officials, industry personnel and postgraduate students in Animal Nutrition to join the two-day event and be a part of this historic occasion.
